I always used to find it very irritating when as a child people told me that you learn best from your mistakes. The idea that I couldn’t be perfect, or just know the right answers all the time probably rubbed up against my teenage ego a little too much.
But as I’ve grown up, I’ve come to see the important truth in this statement. While it can still be daunting to throw myself into situations where I might make a mistake, those are the exact situations from which I gain the most. They push the boundaries of what I understand and what I’m able to do, as well as surprising me with what I can already handle.
We create a fun environment where you can just try things and see what happens. Sometimes it’s what you expected, sometimes not, either way you’re building your understanding of the issues.
This belief drives our approach at Heuristic (Cultivate’s sister company). Out in the ‘real world’ mistakes can feel high-risk, and so we avoid them, especially in our professional environments. However, with that understandable avoidance we also lose out on that opportunity to learn and develop our skills. Heuristic’s gamified workshops are the perfect place to make those mistakes in a safe and learnable way. We create a fun environment where you can just try things and see what happens. Sometimes it’s what you expected, sometimes not, either way you’re building your understanding of the issues.
What happens at our gamified workshops
During our workshops, we get everyone discussing the different successes and setbacks that players faced in the room. We keep these discussions light-hearted, focusing on them as a chance for everyone to share and deepen their understanding. This way, everyone learns from each other’s experiences, not only what they’ve found within the games, but in the ‘real world’ beyond the workshops. These discussions really help us foster connections between everyone in the room as we crash through the game-based simulations together.
If you don’t get to make mistakes then you miss out on a chance to learn and connect.
